Oneida County has confirmed a second case on animal rabies this year.
A bat discovered in Marcy has tested positive for the deadly disease, health officials said.
Bobbi Jo Girven with the County Health Department says a dog in the vacinity of the rabid bat could have come into contact with it. The dog did not have a current rabies vaccination and it will either have to be euthanized of quarantined for 6 months.
This underscores the importance of having your pet vaccinated, health officials said. "If this dog had been up to date on its rabies shot, all it would need is a booster shot", Girven said.
The Health Department has a vaccination clinic scheduled from 5 to 7 tonight at the Cassville Fire Department. All pets must be in carriers and there is a $10 donation charge.
Girven says you can also contact you veterinarian.
